Lawyers hourly rates may vary dramatically from state to state and from lawyer to lawyer. Many times the hourly rate that youre quoted is a reflection of a combination of factors unique to the lawyer. It may be worthwhile to discuss lawyers fees in advance and base your decision on the particularities of your case. If a case is simple and straight forward, you are likely to find any number of qualified lawyers that charge a reasonable fee. However in the event of a complicated or serious case it can be a good idea to pay more for a lawyer that have a set of skills that are relevant to your case. Lawyers not only represent their clients in court, they provide advice and direction that is crucial for the case. In addition, when trying to estimate the cost of legal representation, be sure to include court costs and unexpected expenses.

Rates for lawyers services vary according to his/her expertise, experience and the urgency of the case along with the complexities of the case. The fee structure of an individual lawyer may also reflect the norm in a given area, for example some regions of the country would have a lower average rate while another area that may have a high average rate. Sometimes the court may set a limit on fees that a lawyer may charge, as is often the case in workers compensation. There are some guidelines for the kinds of expenses you can anticipate when consulting an attorney.

Types of charges applied by lawyers

Flat fee- A flat fee may be accessed on some cases. This fee would cover the expenses incurred from the start of the case until the finish. This type of fee structure is most likely charged for cases that are routine or that have a predictable duration based on the previous experiences of the attorney.

Contingent fees- a contingent fee is based on a satisfactory conclusion to a case. Based on this type of fee you are not charged if you lose the case. However, you may be assessed expenses that are a result of the lawyers attempts to resolve your case i.e. necessary expenses. The percentage that a lawyer may charge on a case can vary from 25%-50% of the settlement. This fee structure may be employed in a case that involves an accident or lawsuit for damages.

Hourly Fees- some cases are charged an hourly fee for every hour worked by the lawyer. Sometimes you may be asked to pay a deposit in anticipation of the hours a lawyer estimates the case will take to resolve. This advance in payment is kept in an account until the resolution of the case. In addition there may be fees incurred for attorney expenses.

Retainer- retainers are often utilized by businesses; in order to have assurance that a lawyer will be available should that become a necessity. A retainer will not negate other fees and expenses a lawyer may incur in the event of representing a company or individual in a case.
